I remember when I first heard about networking, I thought, "Plumbers don't network." And for the most part, they don’t. But once I tried it, I realized how beneficial it could be. Not just for plumbers, but for a lot of businesses. Wearing my branded shirt, looking professional, and being a good communicator, I gave it a try. It can be a game-changer for growing your business and reputation. Let’s talk about some things that you can do to make networking work for you.

1. Identify Key Contacts

When you walk into a networking event, know who you need to meet. Look for connectors. For me it was real estate agents, brokers, and insurance people; people who are more than just a potential customer. These folks can introduce you to numerous potential clients. Real estate brokers, for instance, can connect you with home buyers and sellers who often need plumbing services.

2. Follow Up and Follow Through

When you collect contact information, it’s important that you follow up with a message or call. It’s not just about meeting people but building relationships. After meeting a key contact, send a follow-up message, and then follow through with any commitments you made. This shows you’re reliable and keeps you on their radar.

3. Ask Questions

Networking isn’t just about you. I know, for most people it’s easy to talk about themselves. Ask people about their work, what challenges they have, and what they need. This not only builds rapport but also helps you understand how you can be of service. For instance, if you meet someone from a homeowner’s association, ask about common plumbing issues they face and offer solutions.

4. Leverage Social Media
