Plumbing Safety: Don't Be a Drain on Your Health!

Plumbing may seem like an easy trade to break into, but it's not without its hazards. Plumbers work with chemicals, electricity, and heavy machinery on a daily basis, and knowing how to protect yourself is essential. In this blog post, we'll cover some plumbing safety tips to make sure you stay healthy and injury-free on the job.

1. Use Protective Gear

Personal protection equipment (PPE) is non-negotiable. As a plumber, you'll be exposed to many hazardous materials such as chemicals, sewage, bacteria, and other toxic wastes. So, the first step towards a safe plumbing job is investing in protective gear such as face masks, gloves, and safety goggles. These gears will keep your respiratory system, eyes, and skin protected from harmful chemicals.

2. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is an important aspect of plumbing safety. Plumbing can be a physically demanding job that requires a lot of energy and exertion. If you're in Texas, you better make sure you sttay hydrated - you can't do any plumbing if you're suffering from heat stroke. Dehydration can lead to serious health complications, so make sure you drink adequate amounts of water before, during, and after your job.

3. Practice Electrical Safety

Electricity is an inevitable part of plumbing, but it's also a major hazard that can lead to electrocution and burns. Before embarking on any electrical work, make sure that you have the appropriate training to handle electricity or else call an electrician. Always steer clear of exposed wires, damp conditions, and liquids when handling electricals.

4. Lift Heavy Objects with Caution

Plumbing involves carrying heavy tools and equipment which can lead to back strains and musculoskeletal disorders. Always use proper lifting techniques or utilize machinery for heavy lifting. Back muscles can be vulnerable to heavy tasks due to overuse or lack of conditioning, so training and stretches can improve your longevity and prevent accidents. Hey you know what you signed up for right? I’m 60 years old and I still feel great, so thius work doesn’t have to be super rough on your body. Also, it beats sitting in a chair all day inside of a box, but that’s just my opinion.

5. Wear Proper Shoes

As a plumber, you'll be required to work in wet and slippery conditions, so wearing appropriate non-slip shoes is crucial. Proper shoes help to avoid slips, trips, and falls on the job, which can lead to serious injuries. Get yourself a good pair of work boots!
