Do you need a mentor?

In my 40 years in the plumbing industry, I've learned a lot about what it takes to succeed. Today, I want to talk about the value of having a mentor and the benefits it can bring to your career. Whether you're just starting out or looking to advance, a good mentor can make all the difference.

Now if you know me at all, you know I always talk about never stop learning. The trades are constantly evolving, and staying updated on the latest tools, techniques, and technologies is so important. Attend workshops, read industry publications, and always look for ways to improve your skills. I say everyone should get up and study for 30-60 minutes every single day. The more you know, the better you'll be.

Networking is key to finding the right mentor. Get to know other professionals in your industry. Join trade associations, attend local meetups, and engage in online forums. A strong network can open doors to new opportunities, provide valuable insights, and offer support when you need it most.

Finding the right mentor can be hard. One of the most impactful steps I took in my career was getting a mentor. My first mentor was Michael Gerber, author of "The E-Myth Contractor." Attending his event and hiring him as a coach changed my life. A mentor can offer guidance, support, and the benefit of their experience.

I learned so much from him. And I truly believe that I would not be where I am today without him and mentors like him.

Now not everyone makes a good mentor. I’m going to share with you the 10 things I think are important to look for when you’re looking for a mentor.

  1. Be a Good Listener: A mentor who listens well can understand your needs and provide better guidance.

  2. Be Available: I’m a busy guy, but it’s important that your mentor makes time for you when you need it.

  3. Be Honest: Honest feedback helps you grow and avoid mistakes.

  4. Have Experience: Experience is everything. Learn from someone who been where you want to go.

  5. Be Someone Who Cares: A mentor who cares about your success will go the extra mile to help you.

  6. Be a Thought Leader: A mentor who is a thought leader can offer innovative ideas and perspectives.

  7. Be Coachable: A good mentor is also open to learning and growing themselves.

  8. Be Someone with Expertise: Specific expertise in your field is essential for practical advice.

  9. Be Relatable: A mentor you can relate to makes the learning process easier.

  10. Bring Value: A mentor should add value to your career through their knowledge and network.

Making the Most of Your Mentorship

Once you have a mentor, make the most of the relationship by being open to feedback, asking questions, and being willing to learn. Remember, the goal is to grow and improve, so take their advice seriously.
